In middle school, I was twice assigned "weird hybrid" projects to explore evolutionary adaption of animals. The first was to create a hybrid of any two real animals and explain how the hybrid"s traits helped it survive. I created a butterfly-winged wolf and said some nonsense about the wings helping it pursue prey. The second was to draw any animal (real or fake), then cut the head off our drawing, paste on the head of some randomly selected creation from another classmate. I drew a horse and was given a humanoid skull with fangs and, again, had to explain how the animal functioned with its traits.
With those science classroom exercises in my academic background, these horses with butterfly wings and claws on their hooves seem less absurd.
